Volunteer Opportunities at Coastal Home Health and Hospice

How Volunteers Make A Difference

Volunteers can make a huge impact on the life of our hospice patients. From taking the time to visit or read a story, to helping somebody take care of their pets, to playing music for someone, to recording someone's life story, or even helping us here in the office to file, mail our newsletter, or help us apply for grants, every moment spent helping is deeply appreciated!

Sometimes, just knowing that there's someone else out there that cares about them is enough to make a huge impact on a patient's well-being.

Volunteering at Coastal Home Health and Hospice is no ordinary experience. You will experience the joy of making a difference in someone’s life by contributing your unique interests, skills, and talents- no matter what the activity, the gift of time leaves a lasting impression on a patient and family.

Our volunteers are a special group of dedicated individuals who care about their neighbors, friends, and families in our community. There are people from many backgrounds and talents: they are students, office workers, homemakers, retirees, and other professionals. Their desire is to give of themselves and their abilities to serve others.

Whether you decide to work directly with our patients and families or choose to volunteer in other ways, you are integral to our mission of caring. You will change a life… and it may just be your own!

Ways To Volunteer

Helping hospice patients directly

You can help patients in person, over the phone, or virtually over the internet! Hours are flexible.

  • Provide in-person or virtual companionship to patients and their families through conversation

  • Reading books, poetry, or even mail to patients

  • Helping with a patient’s house plants, yard, or garden

  • Running errands or picking up a grocery order for a patient

  • Giving caregivers a much-needed break by spending a few hours keeping the patient company

  • Giving the gift of music to patients (even if you can't sing or play an instrument yourself!). Touched By Sound volunteers play recordings, an instrument, or sing to patients. Music is used to enhance feelings of well-being,  relaxation, reminiscence, and distraction.  Even if a patient struggles to communicate due to cognitive impairment, research has shown that music can still powerfully impact them in a deep way. Orientation, training, and supervision are provided.

  • Helping patients share their unique stories with the world. Our life stories volunteers create a video or audio or written record of patients sharing their Memories. The patient and family may be presented with a CD or booklet that preserves their life story and serves as a living Memorial. Hours are flexible depending on your schedule and the needs of the patients and their families. Orientation, training, and supervision are provided.

  • Veterans Visiting Veterans-  Sometimes the best companions are those with shared experiences. If you are a veteran who wants to support fellow veterans, this is a great opportunity for you!
