Activities for Seniors in Curry County
Curry County, Oregon, is such a beautiful place to live! And even though our cities are small, there are still many senior-friendly activities that you can participate in.
Beaches
When you live so close to the ocean, it can be really easy to take it for granted and never actually take the time to visit. Plan a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, or even take a picnic lunch and eat in your car with the windows down to enjoy the soothing sound of the waves. Harris Beach near Brookings has a really nice handicap-access ramp.
Walking and Hiking
Even if you just walk around the block, it is so healthy and relaxing to get outside in the sun. There are several trails that are relatively flat, and you can also find “easy hike” groups on Meetup.org and on Facebook.
The Library
While we don’t have any big-box mega bookstores with cafes or coffeeshops inside around here, we do have some gorgeous libraries. Even if you just go to sit and quietly people watch, there is just something special about being around the works of authors from around the world and throughout the ages.
Local Senior Centers
There are senior/community/activity centers in Brookings, Gold Beach, and Port Orford that you can visit. And don’t settle for just hanging out at the location in your city- spread your wings, visit them all, and meet some new people!
Museums
There are a few small museums throughout Curry County that get easily overlooked because they are a bit tucked away. Consider the Chetco Valley Historical Society Museum near Brookings, the Curry Historical Museum or Jerry’s Rogue River Museum and Gift Shop in Gold Beach, or the Port Orford Lifeboat Station in Port Orford.
Volunteer!
There are plenty of great volunteer opportunities in our area, ranging from the humane society, to the food bank, to mentoring at the high school, to Curry County CASA.
You could also volunteer for us! We always need more people to visit with hospice patients, take care of their pets, and help patients with household chores. Learn more about Coastal’s volunteer opportunities by clicking here.
Get Creative
There are many art clubs and shops throughout Curry County. The Manley Art Center in Brookings has open studio time where you can go work around fellow artists, and Southwestern Oregon Community College offers classes in Gold Beach and Port Orfod. Curry Arts is also a great resource for finding upcoming classes and events.
