The Future of Hospice

Studies show that since 2017, 100% of new hospices are for-profit.  As of now, 30% of all hospices are non-profit and 70% are for-profit.  The reason that this is a disturbing trend is that the patient is the one that suffers without the extra services that non-profit hospices provide.  With the trends being that for-profit is the future of hospice, the patient won’t receive the more personalized treatments that non-profits are able to provide

In Curry County there is one Hospice.  It started as a program under Curry County Health in 1995.  In 2010, the Curry County Commissioners voted to allow the program to be a stand-alone entity as Curry County Home Health & Hospice.  In 2011, Curry County Home Health & Hospice became Coastal Home Health & Hospice, Inc.  In contrast, Del Norte County in California doesn’t have hospice services.  They do provide home health in-home services but have no hospice services available to their inhabitants.  This means that patients in Del Norte either must move to a county with hospice services or they pass in a hospital setting.
