Creating a Cheerful Indoor Environment When It’s Dreary Outside

Winters in Oregon can be wet and overcast. If it’s grey too many days in a row, it’s easy to start feeling a bit “blah,” especially if you’re home-bound.

Here are some of our favorite tips to cheer up your space!

Pops of color

Just because it is grey outside, doesn’t mean that your house has to be dull and boring, too! Adding color can be as simple as adding a few fun throw pillows, a comfy blanket, or a rug. You could also choose colorful dishes (there are inexpensive options at the dollar store), a unique mug for your tea or coffee, or some vibrant art for your walls.

Plants and Flowers

It’s amazing how flowers can brighten up any space! Cut flowers are nice from time to time, but living plants are an especially nice addition to any space. Many plants, like Snake Plant and Pothos don’t require much sunlight, so the fog and clouds don’t negatively affect them.

Sense of Smell

Certain scents can instantly lift your mood. Orange, grapefruit, lemon, cinnamon, coffee, jasmine, and mint are all shown to boost moods. Simmer some citrus and cinnamon on the stove, buy a room spray, or use an essential oil diffuser.

Fire

There is something about fire that powerfully resonates with the human spirit. If you don’t have a fireplace, consider purchasing a few candles (you can even choose candles with mood-boosting scents from the list above!). And if you don’t want to worry about open flames in your house, there are pretty convincing faux candles that flicker like real candles that are an excellent substitute.

Tea Time and Coffee Breaks

Treating yourself to an afternoon tea or coffee with one of your favorite snacks can bring some cheer to the room when it is cold and dreary outside. Make sure to use a nice mug and/or plate, and take the time to savor each bite.

Get Snuggly

A favorite pair of slippers, a fuzzy blanket, and really soft clothes can make anyone feel cozy.
