Apps For People With Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Everything changes when someone you love starts to develop dementia. You worry about what they may forget and when, if they will be able to find their way home, and if they will be able to take care of themselves when you aren’t available. You worry about their quality of life as the things that they used to value slowly slip from their minds at times.

Thankfully, there are many apps that are being developed for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Here are a few of our favorites.

1) My Reef 3D Aquarium

This “game” is featured on many “Best Games” lists for patients with advanced dementia. Featuring colorful fish that you can feed and interact with, the game has a soothing soundtrack and is very relaxing. Available on both Android and iOS.

2) Flower Garden

The “land lubber’s” version of the My Reef game mentioned above, Flower Garden allows you to grow potted flowers from seeds, and, after they have bloomed, you can send them via the app to loved ones. This is a great way to stay connected and have relaxing fun at the same time! Available for both Android and iOS.

3) Luminosity: https://www.lumosity.com/en/

Luminosity is a large collection of brain games that progressively expand along with the player’s abilities, so the games are only as difficult as the user is able to comfortably handle. The variety, quality, sounds, and images are top-notch. Android and iOS

4) MindMate: https://www.mindmate-app.com/

Moving on from game apps, we find MindMate. This app is designed to help patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia with workouts, mind-strengthening games, and recipes. It also includes interesting articles and videos that are short yet helpful. This one is available on Android, iOS, and Desktop/PC.
